Honoring Helen Marsellas: A Legacy of Nursing Excellence at CalvertHealth

Helen P. Marsellas, Calvert hospital’s first Chief Nursing Officer, dedicated her life to the service and care of her community. Serving from 1942 to 1967, Helen’s leadership and commitment to nursing left an indelible mark on Calvert Hospital and the many lives she touched.

The Helen P. Marsellas Pathway to Nursing Educational Fund

In honor of Helen's legacy, the Helen P. Marsellas Pathway to Nursing Educational Fund has been established through the CalvertHealth Foundation.

This fund is dedicated to supporting the educational pursuit of current employees of CalvertHealth pursuing their dreams of becoming a nurse and obtaining their associate degree in nursing (ADN). By offsetting the costs associated with further education, the fund ensures that future nurses can continue to grow in their careers and provide the highest standard of care to our community.

The Pathway to Nursing Educational Fund is a testament to Helen's lifelong commitment to nursing. It provides an opportunity to honor CalvertHealth employees’ hard work, achievements and unwavering commitment to excellence—values that Helen herself exemplified throughout her career. This fund represents not only an investment in the future of nursing but also a tribute to those who, like Helen, dedicate their lives to this noble profession.

A Trailblazer in Nursing

Helen began her distinguished career after graduating as a Registered Nurse from Baltimore General Hospital in 1941. She immediately joined Calvert Hospital, where she served as a Ward Nurse. When the new hospital building was completed in 1958, Helen’s leadership qualities shone through as she took on the roles of Head Nurse and Superintendent of Nursing. Her expertise extended across various departments, including the Operating Room, obstetrics, pediatrics, lab and radiology. Helen also mentored future nursing aides and volunteer high school students, shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Helen's contributions were pivotal in earning numerous compliance recognitions for Calvert Memorial Hospital, further solidifying the hospital's reputation for excellence. Her influence extended far beyond her official duties; she was a pillar of support and guidance for countless nurses and students, instilling in them the values of compassion, dedication and professionalism.

A Legacy of Compassion and Dedication

Helen is survived by her daughter, Constance “Connie” Clark, who has initiated this fund to pay tribute to her mother’s remarkable contributions to nursing and the Calvert County community. Through the Helen P. Marsellas Pathway to Nursing Educational Fund, Helen’s legacy will continue to inspire and support nurses for generations to come.
